A change to how bracket points work. Now instead of doubling per round the default is Fibonacci scoring. A more balanced and rewarding experience.

A New Way to Score Your Bracket

If you’ve been with Brckt since the beginning, you know we’ve always used a doubling system for bracket points: 10 points for the first round, 20 for the second, 40 for the third, and so on—each round worth twice the one before. It worked, but it had a downside, everything basically rides on the finals. The Fibonacci sequence is the perfect mix of still a worthy reward if you get the finals correct but at the same time a well crafted bracket as a whole has a real fighting chance.

What Is Fibonacci Scoring?

Fibonacci scoring uses the famous Fibonacci sequence (1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21, 34…) instead of doubling. The sequence is goes all the way back to 1202. It is famous for appearing throughout nature—spiral shells, sunflower seed patterns, and has been battle tested before with bracket challenges in the past. It’s beautiful and it is practical. At Brckt, the scale will start with 10 and follow the pattern: 10, 20, 30, 50, 80, 130, 210.

Why Make the Switch?

  • Better Competition. Your early round picks carry more weight and a strong bracket end to end can find a way to be victorious in ways outside of only picking the winner correct.
  • Fair & Proven. The amount of game theory at play for a game like this can drive one insane if they let it. We are evolving but we are rooted in a system that has proved itself valuable for many centuries and many bracket challenges.

When Does It Take Effect?

Fibonacci scoring will be the default option for all groups moving forward. Double scoring will still be available for private groups that prefer that format so if that is how you prefer the scoring for your groups nothing will change.

Here’s to tighter leaderboards and more fun down the stretch.
